A year our inception in 2004, Deryk joined the original four founders in 2005 as the company's first full time employee. He was born and raised in San Francisco, and also went to San Jose State University (just like Joubin, Kurt, William, and Feraydoon) to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. After the tragic loss of his father, he us in 2007 to move back in and be closer to his mom and two younger brothers. Although he left the company, he never left being part of our family and stayed in touch throughout the years. Deryk worked for another private engineering consulting firm for over eight years, which was closer to home, where he continued to provide services solely to municipal agencies. Next he shifted to the public sector where he worked for the City of San Mateo for nearly ten years. While at the City of San Mateo, he further honed his engineering and management skills working on a 10-year, $1 billion wastewater capital improvement program that upgraded San Mateo's wastewater collection system and treatment plant facilities to replace aging infrastructure, build wet weather capacity, meet regulatory requirements, and align with the City's sustainability goals.
In 2025, he rejoined our family to bring his leadership and unique skillsets that he gained through working in both the public and private sectors of the industry.
He says, "I live by my values, which I easily remember through a simple and corny mnemonic (S.P.I.C.E.), which stand for Service, Play, Integrity, Community, and Exploration." One of his key love languages is providing acts of Service, plus he thrives on continuing to provide service to the Bay Area communities and any member of his many circles. For Play, he loves golfing, snowboarding, going to shows or sporting events, and playing board games. He continues to strive to live with Integrity and to trust himself to do the right thing. Building and maintaining a sense of Community is his favorite value. He has many community circles, which include his direct blood family (his mom and two younger brothers); his extended family (just on his mom's side, he has 27 first cousins that he is really close with); his loving and long-term partner (Sophie), her son (Noah), and cat (Quattro, which Noah named after Deryk's old Audi SUV, plus the fact that the cat has four legs and is the fourth member of their little family); all the friends that he has made throughout the years; and lastly the organizations and communities that he provides services to professionally. His last value is Exploration, which has resulted in him exploring nearly 30 countries, exploring the culinary world (he is open to eat anything at least once, but his favorites are pizza, tacos, and sushi), and continued exploration of technologies, documentaries, art, mental health, and organizational optimization.
One of the reasons he returned was because his values directly align with our core values of Quality, Fun, Respect, Balance, Trust, Integrity and Family. He also says that "Everyone should add a bit of flavor to their lives by adding some S.P.I.C.E.!"
