Chaparral Way Water Main Project - Los Altos Hills County Fire District, CA

The Los Altos Hills County Fire District (LAHCFD) provides fire protection, suppression and safety services to the Town of Los Altos Hills and portions of unincorporated Santa Clara County. The Town of Los Altos Hills is a premier Silicon Valley residential community located approximately fifteen miles north of downtown San Jose. The advocates of incorporation were dedicated to the "preservation of the rural atmosphere of the foothills an orderly and unhurried growth". Numerous Silicon Valley executives are residents of Los Altos Hills where the market value of unimproved lots is currently estimated at 2 million dollars per acre.
Providing fire protection for such a picturesque community can pose unique challenges during design and construction of new water mains and fire hydrants. Serving as on-call District Engineer for the LAHCFD, Pakpour Consulting Group conducts extensive hydraulic modeling of the service area and works closely with District staff to optimize locations of new fire hydrants.
In anticipation of a new 3 lot subdivision located near Moody Road and to provide greater fire protection for the area, the LAHCFD installed 4,300 linear feet of 8-inch ductile iron pipe along Chaparral Way to loop the system in the area. The project also included installing 4 fire hydrants and a pressure reducing station. Chaparral Way is a rural, unpaved roadway used as primary access for residents in the area. Pakpour Consulting Group prepared plans, specifications, cost estimate and provided bid assistance and construction management for the project. Pakpour Consulting Group also worked closely with residents and the LAHCFD to incorporate constructability and access concerns into design documents. Once the project was complete, the water main became part of the Purissima Hills Water District distribution system.
