The Apple Hill Estates subdivision was constructed in the early 1990’s as a high end development in the City of Brentwood. Since that time, subsequent residential developments put a strain on the existing flood control and bike path facilities in the area.
The City of Brentwood selected Pakpour Consulting Group to provide design services for a new concrete bicycle path under Apple Hill Drive (within an existing concrete arch culvert), concrete retaining wall adjacent to the bicycle path under Apple Hill Drive, a 36’ wide by 153’ long gabion drop structure, and channel improvements to Deer Creek Channel. The goal of this project was to provide bicyclists and pedestrians improved access along the pathway without crossing Apple Hill Drive as well as improving the flows within Deer Creek Channel.
Pakpour Consulting Group modeled the existing channel using HEC-RAS and found the channel to be inadequate to convey the 50 and 100-year design flows. Pakpour Consulting Group proposed widening the existing channel, re-grading the channel slope, and incorporating a gabion drop structure to increase the channel’s capacity. Our modeling verified the proposed channel improvements could convey the design flows. Pakpour Consulting Group worked closely with Contra Costa County Flood Control District to ensure the design flows would be contained within the channel.
